When I was in high school, I remember hearing stories of people sneaking into the Waverly Hills Sanatorium. This was the site of the tuberculosis hospital that served patients between 1910 and 1961. After the site was closed people would find a way into the property to seek out ghosts and hauntings. I was always too afraid to go and have never been one to have any interest in pursuing such darkness.
Waverly often tops the list as one of the most haunted places in the world (Travel Channel, 2021). Today, the historic hospital is available for paranormal investigations, tarot readings, psychic galleries, and haunted events. The allure of such events at Waverly and other places have gained popularity in recent years.
The obsession with darkness is common in our modern world. The ghosts and gremlins of Halloween are not just popular for the holiday, they have found their way into our daily lives and age does not seem to matter. Disney’s newest series, Little Demon is one such example. According to Focus on the Family’s Plugged In, “this show is terrible, it just is.” Check out their review of the first episode. This won’t be a show I have playing anywhere near my house.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 tells us to “Abstain from every form of evil” and Leviticus 19:31 says, “Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits to be unclean by them.” The Bible warns us to stay away from darkness, demons, the devil, divination, evil spirits, false prophets, idolatry, magic, mediums, omens, soothsaying, sorcery, wickedness, witchcraft, and wizards. It warns us to not mock God, as Disney’s Little Demon does. There will be punishment for those that toy with such evil ways for we “cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons” (1 Corinthians 10:21).
My prayer for us today is that we will become more sensitive to the things we should be sensitive to. Sensitive to the evil and darkness that penetrates our world. Let’s plan to set up a boundary around our own homes to protect the eyes and ears of our loved ones. To protect the body, heart, mind, and soul of our favorite people of this world. We have a responsibility to cast out evil from our homes and open the doors for Jesus.
